The five car maintenance habits that matter most in Sri Lanka are: service on time, check fluids and tyres every month, protect the paint, keep the cabin dry, and act on warning signs early. Heat, humidity, heavy rain and stop-start traffic all wear a vehicle faster than gentle driving does.
1. Service on time, and allow for hard use
Follow the service interval in your owner's manual, by distance or by time, whichever comes first. Much everyday driving here counts as hard use: short trips, slow traffic, dusty roads and hot, humid weather. Many manufacturers give a shorter interval for those conditions, so check which one applies to you.
Regular servicing is the cheapest maintenance there is, because it catches small problems before they become large ones.
2. Do a five-minute check every month
Once a month, and before any long trip, look over the basics. Do it with the engine cold and the vehicle on level ground.
- Engine oil level on the dipstick
- Coolant level in the reservoir (never open a hot radiator cap)
- Tyre pressures, including the spare, against the label on the driver's door frame
- Tyre tread and sidewalls for wear, cuts or bulges
- All lights, the wipers and the washer fluid, especially before the rainy season
3. Protect the paint from sun, rain and salt air
Strong sun fades paint, and rainwater and coastal air leave deposits that mark it. Wash the vehicle regularly, park in shade when you can, and remove bird droppings and tree sap quickly.
A layer of wax gives the paint extra protection and makes the vehicle easier to keep clean.
4. Keep the cabin dry
In humid weather a damp interior quickly turns musty. Dry wet floor mats in the sun, do not leave wet umbrellas or clothes in the car, and vacuum regularly. Running the air conditioning helps dry the air inside.
If the carpets are wet and you cannot explain why, have it looked at. A leak will not fix itself.

5. Act on warning signs early
A dashboard warning light, a new noise, a vibration or a fluid spot under the vehicle are all early warnings. Have them checked while they are still small. A red warning light means stop when it is safe and do not keep driving.
Make it a routine
None of these habits takes long, and together they keep a vehicle reliable for years. If you are not sure what condition your vehicle is in, a vehicle inspection is a sensible place to start.
