To keep a car interior fresh in humid weather, keep it dry: take out wet mats and damp items, deal with spills straight away and vacuum regularly. Musty smells come from moisture trapped in carpets and seats, so removing the damp matters more than covering the smell.
Why do car interiors smell musty?
Carpets, seat foam and floor mats hold water. In warm, humid weather a damp cabin with the windows closed is an ideal place for mould and bacteria to grow, and that growth is what you smell.
Air fresheners only hide it. The smell returns until the moisture and the dirt feeding it are gone.
What should you do every week?
A few minutes regularly prevents most problems.
- Take out rubbish, food wrappers and bottles.
- Shake out the floor mats, and dry them fully in the sun if they are wet.
- Wipe up spills when they happen, before they soak in.
- Do not leave wet umbrellas, towels, sports kit or shoes in the car.
- Vacuum the seats, carpets and footwells.
How do you keep moisture out?
Air conditioning dries the air as well as cooling it, so running it helps clear a damp cabin and misted windows. On a dry day, opening the doors for a while lets the interior air out.
If the carpets are wet and you cannot explain why, look for the source. Blocked drains, worn door seals and leaks around the windscreen all let water in, and no amount of cleaning will fix a cabin that keeps getting wet.
When is a professional clean worth it?
Home cleaning has limits. Consider interior detailing in these cases.
- A smell that comes back after cleaning
- Stains that have soaked into the seats or carpet
- Visible mould on any surface
- After a spill of milk, food or drink that reached the carpet
- After the rainy season, or before selling the vehicle
