Cut and polish vs waxing: what is the difference?

One corrects the paint and the other protects it. Knowing which is which saves you paying for the wrong job, and explains why they are done in a set order.

A cut and polish corrects the paint: it uses a machine and fine abrasives to remove oxidation, swirl marks and light scratches. Waxing protects the paint: it adds a layer on top that gives gloss and shields the surface. Polishing fixes how the paint looks, and wax keeps it that way.

What does a cut and polish do?

Scratches and dullness sit in the top layer of the paint. A cut and polish levels that surface very slightly, so light reflects evenly again and the colour regains its depth.

Because it removes a tiny amount of the surface each time, a cut and polish is a corrective treatment and not something to repeat often. It is done when the paint needs it.

What does waxing do?

Wax does not remove anything. It leaves a thin protective layer between the paint and sun, rain and road grime, adds gloss and makes the vehicle easier to wash.

Wax wears away with time, washing and weather, so it is a regular upkeep job.

Which one does your car need?

Look at the paint in good light after a wash.

  • The paint is glossy and smooth: waxing alone will protect it.
  • You can see fine circular marks, haze or light scratches: a cut and polish first, then wax.
  • The colour looks faded or chalky: a cut and polish first, then wax.
  • A scratch catches your fingernail: it is probably too deep for polishing alone, so ask for advice.

Why is wax always applied last?

Wax seals whatever is underneath it. Applied over dull or marked paint, it protects the dullness. Applied after a cut and polish, it protects the corrected finish, which is why the two are so often done together.
